What is Bad Cholesterol? – Be Aware of Your LDL Level

What is bad cholesterol? LDL carries cholesterol to the different tissues throughout your body.

Too much of this bad cholesterol could get you in trouble and could make you a victim of coronary artery disease.

LDL (Bad) Cholesterol

LDL cholesterol is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it contributes to plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can clog arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or stroke can result. Another condition called peripheral artery disease can develop when plaque buildup narrows an artery supplying blood to the legs.

HDL cholesterol is considered “good” cholesterol because it helps remove LDL cholesterol from the arteries. Experts believe HDL acts as a scavenger, carrying LDL cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it is broken down and passed from the body. One-fourth to one-third of blood cholesterol is carried by HDL. A healthy level of HDL cholesterol may also protect against heart attack and stroke, while low levels of HDL cholesterol  have been shown to increase the risk of heart disease.

What Is Bad Cholesterol Doing In Your Body?

Here’s what nasty things it does and why you should be alarmed:

It can build up gradually along the inner walls of your arteries.

As you load your diet with pork, ice cream, pastries and other delicious goodies regularly, your bad cholesterol will slowly but surely pile up and form plaque.

And then your arteries get narrow.
Sooner or later, a clot forms…then blocks a narrow artery. That’s when you get a heart attack or a stroke.

Get A Low-Density Lipoprotein Test

This is to measure how much ldl you have in your blood and to determine your risk for heart disease.

The test is usually a part of a lipid analysis that also checks your hdl and triglycerides.

How To Prepare

Do not eat or drink anything for 12 hours before the test. Do not take certain drugs before you take the test because these drugs can affect the result.

These Drugs Are

  • Aspirin
  • Birth control pills
  • Corticosteroids
  • Phenotiazines
  • Sulfonamides

This is the point where you get to know what is good and what is bad cholesterol levels and what it means in layman’s terms.

The test results will be shown in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) and here’s what the results of the test mean:

  • Less than 100 mg/dl – Optimal, it means do not worry about a thing
  • 100 – 129 mg/dl – Near Optimal, you are still safe
  • 130 – 159 mg/dl – Borderline High
  • 160 – 189 mg/dl – High, it means you are now a candidate for a heart attack
  • 190 mg/dl and up – Very High, it means better brace for a heart attack which will come any time soon

So, Should you be concerned if the test shows you what is bad cholesterol at, say, 159 mg/dl?

That is borderline high.
You should be.
And you would be better off if you know what is bad cholesterol, the consequence if you take things for granted and why it is essential to take some preventive measures before things get out of hand.

How To Lower Bad Cholesterol
